Curriculum

Dr. Danail Hristozov is a senior
research fellow at University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, Italy. He is currently
performing integrative research across the fields of risk assessment and
governance of engineered nanomaterials as a principal investigator of the
large-scale SUN project (http://www.sun-fp7.eu/). Over the last 5 years Danail
has contributed to several EU projects, including NanoFASE, MARINA, NANOforART, ENPRA,
ITS-NANO, GLOCOM, ECONANOSOPRB and EPSEI also as research staff of the private
sector companies Venice Research Consortium and Veneto Nanotech. Before moving
to Italy, Danail worked at Malsch Techno Valuation, a consultancy firm in the
Netherlands, where he specialized in Technological Assessment of emerging
technologies in the Observatory Nano and ICPC NanoNet projects. In his early
years as a researcher, Danail was employed at the Chair of Industrial
Sustainability of the Brandenburg University of Technology in Germany, where he
studied the benefits and risks of engineered nanomaterials for the environment
and the human health.

In these projects Danail
developed highly interdisciplinary research using methodological approaches and
tools integrating knowledge from Occupational Hygiene, Consumer Safety,
Industrial Sustainability, Sociology, Environmental Science, Chemistry,
Physics, Decision Science, Mathematics and Statistics. The high quality of his
research results is highlighted by acceptance of his research papers (often as
a first author) in high-ranking international journals such as NanoToday (impact
factor 15) and Nanotoxicology (impact factor 7) as well as the publication of a
number of book chapters and roadmap documents. He has also been acting as a
guest editor in the Environment Systems and Decisions and the Environmental
Science: Nano journals and is a member of the editorial board of the new
Elsevier Nano Impact journal.

Danail received the only 3rd level senior postdoctoral
fellowship ever awarded by University Ca’ Foscari of Venice as an
acknowledgement for his significant contribution to the organisation in terms
of fundraising and project implementation as compared to his peers. He was also
awarded a PhD scholarship by the same institution as well as prestigious awards
and competitive grants including: Best Paper Award at the Society for Risk
Analysis Annual Meeting 2012 in San Francisco; Lifelong Learning Programme
Grant by the EC; several travel awards for attending conferences as well as
international mobility grants and scholarships.

Danail has started initiatives to promote his research
internationally and transfer knowledge and skills to the new generations of
researchers. Specifically, he founded and co-chairs of the Sub-group on
“Training” in the Working Group on “Dissemination” of the European NanoSafety
Cluster (NSC). He also launched and currently co-chairs the Society for Risk
Analysis Roundtable with the NSC, which aims at advancing science and policy,
training and education, information exchange and dissemination in the
nanosafety research area. Moreover, he has been a member in the scientific
programme committees of a number of conferences, workshops and training
schools, including the Society for Risk Analysis World Congress on Risk 2015 in
Singapore, the EU – U.S. Sustainable Nanotechnology Conference 2015 in Venice,
two editions of the NanoSafety School and one edition of the Sustainable
Nanotechnologies School in Venice. Danail also chaired several sessions in the
above conferences and organised or participated to more than 25 workshops.
